The Breadwinner by Debra Ellis

The Breadwinner brings to life an issue that has recently exploded in the international media-- the reality of life under the Taliban. Young Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul, Afghanistan.

We have read the first five chapters of the novel.  Name any two character traits of Parvana that appeal to youGive reasons to support your thought.

  1. I think that Parvana was a Caring and Responsible girl. Parvana was extremely caring as she walked her father to and from the market every day. She was also caring as she helped her mother clean the house and helped with other chores too. She was responsible as she goes to work disguised as a boy. Although disguising herself and cheating others to think she was a boy, may not be a responsible deed, it is still an act of responsibility as it shows she cares about her family, and that she was willing to try to lead them into surviving, this is also a act of risk taking. Overall I think Parvana is a bold girl who was responsible and extremely caring.

    1. Boldness is what Parvana has in her, yet with responsibility. I think these traits are rather difficult to manage but as the story unfolds, we know that Parvana is able to skilfully balance both of these.

Good job with being able to spot these traits in Parvana.

  3. I think Parvana is a very courageous girl who tries to get her dreams fulfilled.
For example she tells the Taliban to stop beating her mother when they try to get father out of prison.

I also believe that parvana is an extreme risk taker because she decides to go on the road and sell goods to earn money for her family disguised as a boy!

    1. Requires a lot of courage from a young girl to face the wrath of the Taliban! A truly inspirational story and one that you will love to read on.

  4. Parvana is a very responsible daughter and helps her family in everything. She helps her family in everything like feeding 2 little kids, helping her mother in cooking and cleaning and also helps her father to go to the market. But when Parvana’s father was arrested she had distinguish herself to a boy.

    1. Don't you think Parvana, through her actions, has much to teach us all. The choices she decides to make are all very challenging.

  5. Parvana is a strong and caring girl, because she has tried many different ideas how she could bring back her family’s life to normal after her father was arrested. Most of the time, she is treated mean by her sister Nooria, but she still takes care of her siblings and tries things that can be best for her surroundings. I think she is extremely strong, because it should be really hard to disguise herself into a boy for supporting her family. If I were her, I would be asking my other sister to do it instead. As I’m reading, I can see Parvana growing into more heroic girl each and every chapter. In the first chapter, I didn’t think that she was as courageous as I think now. She is becoming stronger, more caring, heroic, and positive, by learning from all of her experiences she got in Afghanistan.

    1. Must have been very hard to face each day as Parvana goes through all her experiences? I agree with you when you say she managed to remain calm yet strong, when she decided to take over the responsibility of being The Breadwinner of her family.

  6. I think Parvana is a very risk taking and a caring girl because she always helps her father walking, cleaning the house and taking care of her small brother. When the Taliban barged into Parvana's house and they were hitting their family Parvana shove the the Taliban away from her mother even though she knew that the Taliban could punish her critically this makes her very caring and a risk taking girl.

  7. How many of us, honestly, do you think have the courage that Parvana has? It takes plenty of grit and determination to go the way that Parvana went.
